Following the discontinuation of Honda's fuel-cell Clarity model, the company has diligently pursued the development of its next-generation hydrogen vehicles. The latest addition to their lineup is the CR-V e: FCEV, a hydrogen fuel-cell variant of the CR-V crossover, set to be available for sale later this year.
The CR-V e: FCEV from Honda is equipped with a 17.7-kWh battery to enhance power delivery, along with a second-generation fuel-cell module. It boasts a peak output of 174 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. With an EPA-estimated driving range of approximately 270 miles on hydrogen and around 29 miles on electric power alone, the CR-V e: FCEV achieves combined MPGe ratings of 52 on the highway, 61 in the city, and 57 combined.

The CR-V e: FCEV comes with distinctive visual elements such as clear-lens tail lights, a redesigned front bumper, and an e: FCEV emblem on the tailgate. Its top-tier Touring trim offers luxurious amenities including a 9-inch infotainment display with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, heated bio-based leather seats, a hands-free power tailgate, Honda Sensing suite, and a Bose audio system for advanced driver assistance.

To integrate the fuel-cell system, Honda bolstered the torsional and rear lateral rigidity of the CR-V by 9% and 10%, respectively. Additionally, compared to other variants, the CR-V e: FCEV is extended by 2.8 inches. Production of the hydrogen-powered CR-V is underway at Honda's Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, while the fuel-cell module is being manufactured in Brownstown, Michigan.
Verdict
Honda's introduction of the hydrogen-powered CR-V, known as the CR-V e: FCEV, marks a significant step forward in the development of sustainable transportation. With its innovative fuel-cell technology, extended range, and advanced features, the CR-V e: FCEV offers a promising solution for reducing emissions and promoting eco-friendly driving. As production ramps up in Ohio and Michigan, Honda continues to demonstrate its commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering and environmental responsibility.
